A CAT4 report can look more technical than a familiar school test result. Parents may see scores for verbal, quantitative, non-verbal and spatial reasoning, alongside percentiles and stanines, then understandably ask: what does CAT4 measure? The short answer is cognitive reasoning – the ways a pupil is likely to process information and solve unfamiliar problems – rather than how much of the current curriculum they have memorised.

This distinction matters. A child who has not yet covered a particular maths topic can still show strong quantitative reasoning. Equally, a pupil with excellent classroom attainment may have a more uneven reasoning profile that points to areas where the right support could improve confidence and independence.

What does CAT4 measure?

CAT4 stands for Cognitive Abilities Test: Fourth Edition. It is commonly used by UK state and independent schools, often from late primary through secondary education. Rather than testing taught content in the way that an end-of-topic test, GCSE paper or SATs paper does, it assesses a pupil’s ability to reason using words, numbers, shapes and visual information.

The assessment is divided into four batteries. Together, they build a picture of how a pupil approaches different types of thinking.

Verbal reasoning

The verbal battery considers how well a pupil can identify relationships between words and ideas. Tasks may involve sorting words into categories or recognising a relationship between two words and applying it to another pair.

Strong verbal reasoning can support reading comprehension, written expression, humanities subjects and the ability to understand nuanced questions. It does not simply measure vocabulary size. A pupil may know many sophisticated words but still need time to spot the underlying relationship in an analogy, particularly under timed conditions.

Quantitative reasoning

Quantitative reasoning looks at patterns and relationships involving numbers. Pupils may complete number analogies or identify the next number in a sequence. The focus is on numerical logic rather than the ability to carry out long calculations using a taught method.

This can be relevant to maths and science, but it should not be mistaken for a prediction of a child’s final mathematics grade. Curriculum knowledge, fluency, accuracy, teaching, perseverance and exam technique all remain significant.

Non-verbal reasoning

The non-verbal battery uses abstract shapes and figures. Pupils are asked to spot rules, similarities and changes between visual patterns. Because the questions do not rely heavily on English language knowledge, this section can provide a useful additional perspective for bilingual pupils or those whose verbal development is still catching up with their broader thinking skills.

Non-verbal reasoning is also familiar to many families preparing for selective entrance assessments. However, CAT4 question formats and scoring are not identical to every 11+ or independent-school assessment. It is sensible to prepare for the specific admissions test required by a school rather than assuming one assessment is interchangeable with another.

Spatial reasoning

Spatial reasoning measures the ability to visualise and manipulate shapes mentally. A pupil might need to imagine how a shape changes when folded, turned or combined with another figure.

This type of reasoning can be useful in subjects such as design technology, engineering, physics, computing and geometry. Some pupils with particularly strong spatial scores learn best when explanations include diagrams, models and worked visual examples, rather than lengthy verbal instruction alone.

What CAT4 does not measure

A CAT4 score is useful evidence, but it is not a complete measure of intelligence, effort or future success. It does not directly assess the National Curriculum, subject knowledge, creativity, motivation, organisation, emotional wellbeing or resilience. Nor does it tell a parent whether a child is working consistently in lessons or completing homework carefully.

Context is essential. A pupil may have been tired, anxious, unwell or unfamiliar with computer-based assessments on the day. Children can also develop at different rates, particularly across the transition from primary to secondary school. Schools should interpret CAT4 results alongside teacher assessment, attainment data, classroom observation and the pupil’s own experience.

For this reason, a lower score in one area should never become a label. It is a prompt for thoughtful questions, not a fixed judgement about capability.

How are CAT4 scores reported?

Schools may present CAT4 results in several formats. One of the most common is the Standard Age Score, often shortened to SAS. This compares a pupil’s performance with that of other pupils of the same age nationally. A score of 100 is the average, while most pupils score between 85 and 115.

Percentile ranks are another common measure. A percentile of 75, for example, means that the pupil performed as well as or better than 75 out of every 100 pupils of the same age in the standardisation group. It does not mean they achieved 75 per cent of questions correctly.

You may also see a stanine score from 1 to 9. Stanines group results into broad bands, with 5 sitting around the average range. They are helpful for a quick overview, but they are less precise than the underlying standard age score.

The most valuable part of a report is often the profile across the four batteries. A pupil whose verbal score is much higher than their quantitative score may benefit from maths teaching that makes reasoning steps explicit. A pupil with strong non-verbal and spatial scores but lower verbal results may understand ideas quickly when shown visually, yet need targeted help turning that understanding into written answers.

Why schools use CAT4 assessments

Schools use CAT4 for different purposes. At the start of Year 7, for instance, it can help staff understand an incoming cohort beyond Key Stage 2 results. It may inform target-setting, class planning, learning-support conversations or the identification of pupils who may need additional stretch.

Some independent schools use CAT4 within their admissions process, usually alongside school reports, interviews, entrance examinations and other evidence. In that setting, the assessment can help distinguish a pupil’s reasoning potential from the specific curriculum they have followed so far.

The appropriate weighting depends on the school. Parents should ask how the result will be used, whether there are other assessments involved and what support is available if a profile identifies a weaker area. A single score should not be treated as the sole basis for a major educational decision.

Can a child prepare for CAT4?

CAT4 is designed to assess developed reasoning abilities, so intensive drilling is rarely the best approach. Trying to teach a child every possible question pattern can raise anxiety and give an artificial impression of their usual approach to problem-solving.

That said, sensible familiarisation can be helpful. Pupils benefit from knowing that the assessment is timed, understanding how to use the answer format and practising the habit of reading instructions carefully. A calm night of sleep, a good breakfast and reassurance that the test is not something to fear can make a meaningful difference to how confidently they engage.

Where a child has a clear goal, such as competitive independent-school entry, targeted tuition can develop relevant reasoning skills without reducing learning to repetitive test practice. An experienced specialist can identify whether difficulty comes from vocabulary, number patterns, visualisation, pace or confidence, then build those foundations systematically.

Turning a CAT4 profile into useful support

The best next step is not to focus solely on the highest or lowest number. Look for a practical pattern. Does the pupil find wordy questions harder than diagrams? Are they accurate but slow? Do they understand concepts orally but struggle to show their reasoning on paper?

A constructive conversation with the school can clarify how the results align with classroom performance. From there, support should be specific. A pupil with lower verbal reasoning may benefit from regular reading discussion, vocabulary in context and guided comprehension. For quantitative reasoning, number patterns, logic puzzles and carefully sequenced maths teaching can help. For spatial reasoning, visual models and practical geometry activities may be more effective than extra worksheets alone.
